Background/Research
In 2024, the Orlando Pride won their first trophy since their inception as an NWSL expansion club in 2016. In fact, they have had one of the greatest seasons in league history and are unbeaten in 27 matches. The celebration has been a long time coming, and I wanted to capture that elation graphically.
Design Process
Like many do, iteration started with some scribbles, notes, and messy thumbnail sketches.
There were a few things I knew I wanted to include:
1) Gold text to complement the new and improved trophy design. Gone are the days of the Dinner Plate shield!
2) Lots of purple.
3) Most importantly, I wanted Marta and Barbra Banda, front and center. Marta, widely considered the greatest of all time, has been with the Pride since the beginning and is the heart and soul of the team. Banda has been their breakout star after signing earlier this year and has star power. Two greats from different generations and continents represent the story of the Pride's season.
I saw this beautiful photo, shot by an NWSL photographer, and my vision took shape.
I experimented with a few different typefaces.
